Answer #1

Therapeutic communication is very important aspect for nurses as nurses spends majority of time with patients and nurses act as an advocate for the patient.

Positive communication techniques

1.Positive Body language:This shows how interested you are in a conversation.various body language by maintaining an eye contact, standing straight during a conversation, leaning towards the patient, nodding in response.

2.patient listening:The main important aspect of therapeutic communication is patient listening by not interrupting the conversation, being attentive while listening,

3.Open ended question: questions like why, how, when, which will enhance communication by probing the person to open up more .

4.speak in the language best known by the patient which will allow patient to express all the views

negative communication techniques

1.Not attentive listener:by interrupting the conversation.breaking knuckles, nail picking all this shows that you are not interested in a conversation.

2.nor maintaining an eye contact with the patient shows your lack of confidence .

3 being judgemental:during a conversation do not be judgemental like if a patient gives history of multiple partners do not be judgemental and condemn his act instead you can explain him the adverse effect of it

2.communication techniques for different age group.

Communication can be most effective if you can go to the level of the person for eg if you are conversing to a 5 year old child you can ask the patient about school, favorite, cartoons, joke in a chilishchway use of puppets to share important messages use of videos or pictorial form to explain .

To a middle ahead you will have to speak straight forward, not keeping anything secret, explaining every pros and cons of treatment.and you can use logic and rationalisation while talking to middle aged

To a elder patient you need to speak sloWly,loudly so that the person understand it,use of examples .not being judgemental, give chances for suggestions

3.conflicting cues are when you try to verbalise a particular message but when your body language is not in sync with it for example surgery of a patient is postponed due to unavailability of operation theatre and we tell the patient that since the blood reports were not normal we have postponed it.during this conversation you may fail to maintain eye contact because what you are telling is false this can send conflicting views to the patients.this will lead to further mistrust on you .The patient will not believe further.
