A student, often writes his class notes in a roughbook and copies it carefully in the appropriate subject note books at home.Likewise, a book keeper at first records all the transactions in a book in the order of their occurence before entering them in the respective accounts in the main book. The book that is used to record the transactions first, is known as Journal or Book of Original Entry.Journal is a subsidiary book or supporting book.It is also known as Book of Prime Entry or Day Book.

The Journal shows the names of accounts and amounts to be debited and credited in respect of each transaction. The process of making entries in the Journal is known as Journalising. After each journal entry, a brief description of the transaction is given, it is known as narration.Journal has only one side with Date, Particulars,Ledger Folio,Debit and Credit Columns.Journal facilitates cross checking of ledger accounts in case a trial balance does not agree.

For a student he should be thorough with the basic rules regarding Journal entries and double entry book keeping. For every debit transaction there will be corresponding credit transaction. Before recording a Journal it is essential to analyse a transaction in order to determine the two accounts which are affected.

Adjustment entries are quiet challenging but if we have an idea of basic principles it is easy to solve. Ideas and concepts will be learned by practice and experience. If errors occurs it can be rectified by putting rectification journal entries in current date. As a learner he should study the concepts well.
