What was the significance and legacy of Stumpf’s program at Berlin?
Carl Stumpf was a famous experimental psychologist at the University of the Berlin. At University of the Berlin, Stumpf developed his own laboratory of psychology, which was later named as the psychological institute. He was primarily interested in the acoustical perception. He had published his famous book called as the psychology of the tone.
As a psychologist, he was majorly concerned about the theory of evolution, perceptional and emotional psychology. Stumpf was the first psychologists, who had accepted the close relationship between the philosophy and the psychology. He had developed the understanding among the community that how the psychological experiments could answers the questions related to the mind.
He was agreed with the Brentano that mental events are considered to be as the meaningful events. According to him, the mental phenomena are act like an object to study instead of the conscious elements. This statement given by the stumpf was proven to be the cornerstone for the development of the Gestalt psychology. The founders of the Gestalt psychology Kurt koffka and Max Wertheimer were the classmates of the stumpf only.
