List the reasons for the decline of structuralism. Include in your answer the various criticisms of introspection.
Structuralism concept was deduced by the Titchener. It was the attempt made by Titchener for the scientific study of the past philosophical concerns. Introspection was used as the major tool during the process of the structuralism. Introspection was also inherited from the past by the Titchener.
Scientific use of the introspection was not performed by him, still it yielded the result in accordance with’ who was using the introspection and what they are seeking with it’. Highly trained introspectionists were concerned about the absolute description of the stimulus provided. Titchener’s introspection has shared the resemblance with the retrospection because it has reported the already occurred events.
Apparent unreliability of the concept of the introspection affected the image of the concept of the structuralism. Structuralism was focused on the understanding of mind, adult and the normal. It excluded the other important behaviors like animal behavior. Structuralists were least interested in the study of the various abnormal behaviors.
They have strongly ignored the psychological development, personality and learning processes. They have refused to seek any kind of the practical applications to their study. All these things greatly contributed in the decline of the Structuralism.
