Solutions For An Introduction to Genetic Analysis Chapter 5 Problem 12P

Step-by-Step Solution

Solution 1

No, in this figure the phage progeny could not transduce, since all of the phage particles contain their own DNA.

The phages infect a bacterial cell and release their nucleic acid in to the host cell. This nucleic acid released by the phage particle takes control of the host cell machinery and it replicates. As a result, new phage particles are synthesized in the host cell. During these events, the genome of the host cells degrades and it may get packed in the phage particles. If the newly synthesized phage particles contain the host genome, they will transfer that genome to another new host cell, when they infect a new one. This kind of gene transfer is known as transduction. But in the figure 5-25, no phages are found in the process of transduction, as all the newly synthesized phages contain their own genome, but not bacterial genome.
