To interpret the data, the following results are expected:
Cross | Result |
F+ F¯ | (L) low number of recombinants |
Hfr F¯ | (M) many recombinants |
Hfr Hfr | (0) no recombination |
Hfr F+ | (0) no recombination |
F+ F+ | (0) no recombination |
F¯ F¯ | (0) no recombination |
The only strains that show both the (L) and the (M) result when crossed are 2, 3, and 7. These must be F¯ because that is the only cell type that can participate in a cross and give either recombination result. Hfr strains will result in only (M) or (0), and F+ result in only (L) or (0) when crossed. Thus, strains 1 and 8 are F+, and strains 4, 5, and 6 are Hfr (high-frequency recombination cell).
