The cytoplasm of a cell is at PH7 in the interior of an organelle is PH8. What is the relationship between the number of hydrogen ions present at pH seven versus at PH8? Using your knowledge of transport in cells what is a possible mechanism for how the cytoplasm would have a lower pH then inside the organelle?

pH = - log [H+]

For cytoplasm,

7 = - log [H+]

[H+] = antilog (-7) = 10^-7

For organelle,

8 = - log [H+]

[H+] = antilog (-8) = 10^-8

The pH of cytoplasm is 10 times lesser than the pH of the organelle. It means cytoplasm contains 10 times more H+ ions than the organelle.

This is because the membrane of the organelle contains H+ ions which actively pump H+ ions out of the organelle.
