Answer #1

43. B

The nephrons are the functional units of kidney. A nephron consists of an outer cortex and an inner medulla. An afferent arteriole brings blood which is to be filtered and the efferent arteriole takes back filtered blood.

A nephron consists of -

Bowman's capsule

Glomeruli

Proximal Convoluted tubule (PCT)

Loop of henle -- ascending and descending loop

Distal convoluted tubule (DCT)

Collecting duct

3 process, namely, filtration, absorption and secretion occur which concentrate the urine.

Filtration occurs in the glomeruli while the other two occur in all other parts of the nephron.

Mainly, the PCT allows reabsorption of all essential nutrients, electrolytes, water. H+, NH3, K+ are secreted here from blood while HCO3- is reabsorbed.

Loop of hwlw is important in maintaining high osmolarity. The descending limb is penetrable to water but not to ions while the ascending limb is impenetrable to water but allows exchange of ions.

DCT allows regulated reabsorption of water and Na+, while secretng K+, NH3, HCO3- is also reabsorbed.

Collecting duct reabsorbs a large amount of water so as to produce a hypertonic urine.
