Solutions For An Introduction to Genetic Analysis Chapter 3 Problem 39P

Step-by-Step Solution

Solution 1

A mutant strain stopper [stp] exhibits erratic stop-and-start growth in Neurospora. For the first cross, we use a stopper strain as the mother and a wild type plant as the father to get progeny. All the progeny have the mutation of stopper growth.

Parents:

Progeny: all stopper.

In the reciprocal cross, we use a wild type female as the mother and a stopper strain as the father. All the progeny are normal.

Parents:

Progeny: all wild type.

a) The results of the progeny show that the inheritance is from a specific cytoplasmic organelle. Since Neurospora is a fungus, it does not contain chloroplasts and hence the location of this mutation is in the mitochondrion.

b) The parental details of the cross are:

The progeny from the above cross would all have the stopper gene. Since this inheritance is maternally inherited, they will inherit the stp gene from their mother.

The predicted octad genotypes would be dependent on the nic3 mutation. If the nic3 allele separates in the ratio of 1:1, then the octad arrangement would be:

4 spores: stp; nic3

4 spores: stp; nic3+
