Solutions For An Introduction to Genetic Analysis Chapter 4 Problem 54P

Step-by-Step Solution

Solution 1

The Haldane’s mapping function is a type of function, which adjusts the observed proportion of recombinant gametes for unobserved double crossovers. To calculate the Haldane mapping function we use the following formula:

Where, e = the base of natural logarithms

m = the mean number of successes in a defined sample size.

For the RF of 5%:

This value is multiplied by 50% to get a corrected map distance of 5.27%.

For the RF of 10%:

This value is multiplied by 50% to get a corrected map distance of 11.15%.

For the RF of 20%:

This value is multiplied by 50% to get a corrected map distance of 25.5%.

For the RF of 30%:

This value is multiplied by 50% to get a corrected map distance of 45.8%.

For the RF of 40%:

This value is multiplied by 50% to get a corrected map distance of 80.4%.

A graph of the data would be:

When map distances are small, the observed and corrected frequencies are almost the same. Hence, the larger the RF value, the more important it is to correct the underestimation of map distance by using the mapping function.
