Solutions For An Introduction to Genetic Analysis Chapter 2 Problem 21P

Step-by-Step Solution

Solution 1

This is the way of telling to form a society without sexual reproduction.

If the females are made to produce babies by parthenogenesis that is, cloning, all the individuals will be genetically identical to the mother. In this case, the male will completely disappear within a single generation. This will be the immediate effect.

In the case of sexual reproduction, wide variety of different offspring with new combinations of characters from both father and mother is produced. In parthenogenesis, combination of characters is not possible and the progeny will be genetically identical to the mother. This is the long term-effect in such a society.

Parthenogenesis occurs in few species of lizards, fishes, and insects. In plants asexual reproduction is called apomixes in some species. Seeds are produced without fertilization. Also, many plants and animals reproduce asexually.

Many multicellular species that were reproducing asexually have become extinct. Even though this extinction cannot be explained, the animals which reproduce sexually are having successful reproduction.
