Solutions For An Introduction to Genetic Analysis Chapter 2 Problem 15P

Step-by-Step Solution

Solution 1

Pulsed field gel electrophoresis technique (PFGE) is a technique, which is used to separate different sizes of DNA molecules. It is done by applying an electric field, which changes direction to a gel matrix periodically.

To fractionate the DNA of Neurospora, the DNA is carefully separated and is subjected to PFGE. This fungus has seven different chromosomes; thus, seven bands would be produced.

Likewise, the pea which has seven different chromosomes would produce seven bands. This is because homologous chromosomes are of approximately the same length, same centromere position have genes, for same traits that will co-migrate as single band.
