Solutions For An Introduction to Genetic Analysis Chapter 9 Problem 31P

Step-by-Step Solution

Solution 1

Prokaryotic mRNA (messenger Ribonucleic acid) does not contain introns. The eukaryotic ribosomes are similar in structure and function to those of prokaryotes, except for the molecular weight. This variation is due to the presence of different rRNA (ribosomal RNA) in the ribosomes of prokaryotes and eukaryotes. The process of translation is essentially same in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes except for the processing required for eukaryotic mRNA.

Since prokaryote mRNA does not require processing, the eukaryote ribosomes can translate it. However, eukaryote cell lysate contains exonucleases that degrade mRNA. Eukaryotic mRNA is protected from degraded by adding poly adenylate cap. Though prokaryotic mRNA is also adenylated, the extent of adenylation is comparatively less. This makes the mRNA vulnerable to exonuclease degradation.
